Bat Out Of Hell a 'classic'

Bat Out Of Hell, Meat Loaf’s enduring rock epic, is to be rewarded with the title of ‘classic song’ at next week’s Q Awards. The track was written by the legendary songwriter Jim Steinman with whom Loaf has collaborated on a number of occasions, although the pair have not always seen eye to eye.
Here are ten things you should know about the architect of Bat Out Of Hell, Jim Steinman:

1) Steinman and Meat Loaf’s paths first crossed after the songwriter created a musical called More Than You Deserve in 1974, in which the singer and actor had been cast. The title track was later included on the Dead Ringer album (follow-up to Bat Out Of Hell).

2) His first commercial release was in 1973 when Yvonne Elliman recorded Steinman's song Happy Ending which appeared on the album Food of Love.

3) Bat Out Of Hell has its roots in a production based on JM Barrie’s Peter Pan. While Steinman and Meat Loaf were working on a touring National Lampoon production, they started to develop further three of the tracks which the composer had prepared for the musical, Neverland, for what they hoped would become a seven-song album. These became Bat out of Hell, Heaven Can Wait and All Revved Up With No Place to Go.

4) Steinman’s magic touch transformed Bonnie Tyler from a singer of syrupy – if a little croaky – ballads, to rock chick after producing her album Faster Than The Speed Of Night. He also wrote the title track and number one single Total Eclipse Of The Heart.

5) Steinman is canny recycler. The theme he wrote for a 1979 TV show Delta House was later tweaked and included in the hit single Dead Ringer For Love.

6) Steinman claims he was originally approached to pen the lyrics for the Lord Lloyd-Webber musical The Phantom Of The Opera but had to turn it down because of his commitments with Tyler. However, the pair later collaborated on the West End show (later transferring briefly to Broadway) Whistle Down The Wind.

7) As well as Bat Out Of Hell (a phrase for which Steinman holds the trademark) and Dead Ringer, Steinman went on to work together on Bat Out Of Hell II in 1993, despite years of bad blood. A third Bat album in 2006 saw little collaboration, although it featured seven of the composer’s songs – five of them were covers of previously recorded material, the remaining two adapted from demos of tracks written for musicals.

8) Steinman, 61 in November, reinvented the goth pioneers Sisters Of Mercy with his epic productions on This Corrosion and Dominion/Mother Russia from the band’s second album Floodland. He worked with the Sisters’ Andrew Eldritch again when he co-wrote More for the Vision Thing album.

9) Further collaborators for New York-born Steinman have included wrestler Hulk Hogan, the Everly Brothers, Celine Dion and The Opera Babes.

10) On the Bat Out of Hell album track Paradise By The Dashboard Light, alongside the rather more sober credits for drums, bass and keyboards for the rest of the personnel, Steinman is listed for “lascivious effects”.

Adam Ant is Q Icon

One-time ‘dandy highwayman’ and Prince Charming, Adam Ant, was today named Q Icon at the 2008 Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka.

The 53-year-old singer was behind a string of hits during the 1980s both as frontman for The Ants and as a solo star, including Kings Of The Wild Frontier, Antmusic and Goody Two Shoes.

Ant – real name Stuart Goddard – successfully reinvented himself musically and image-wise on numerous occasions, successfully straddling the punk and New Romantic movements and coping with the loss of his entire band when Malcolm McClaren persuaded them to ditch him and form BowWowWow.

Collecting the title, Ant said: "It's very good to be standing here. It’s very good to be standing actually! I’ve always loved music and I like music that looks good as well. Forgive me for that. And I’ll be collecting my catalogue royaltiese from Coldplay later on (a reference to the Ant-like outfits the band were wearing).

"It does mean a lot for Q to reward me with this award and you will never know how much it means to me," he added.

Last year’s winner of the Q Icon award was Sir Paul McCartney.

The duo, a side-project for Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane from The Rascals, collected the prize – sponsored by Red Stripe - following the release of their debut Age Of The Understatement.

Collecting the award from Tony Christie, Alex Turner said: “Thank you very much. I understand it’s voted by the readers so this means a lot of course. Unfortunately my partner couldn’t be here because he had some trouble with the trains.”

The award was won last year by The Enemy. Other nominees for the 2008 award - voted for by the readers of Q and Qthemusic.com - were:

Fleet Foxes
Glasvegas
The Ting Tings
Vampire Weekend

Glamour on the red carpet

Grace Jones stole the show on the red carpet with a bizarre horned face-mask. The singer – who wore a black trouser suit with a crepe hooded cape topped the unusual adornment with orange LED lights which glowed at the top of the antennae on her mask.

Other guests with fancy outfits included Adam Ant who wore a headscarf topped with a fedora as he arrived for the bash at the Grosvenor House Hotel in central London.

Coldplay arrived in the French resistance-style uniforms they adopted for the release of fourth album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends.

Chris Martin praised Q magazine and said he always found time to attend the annual bash. “We are very busy and very important but we do come here because we love Q, we’ve always read Q and we've always respected it and they've always been really nice to us. It’s like going to an auntie’s birthday party.”

Other guests who tottered up the red carpet included The Ting Tings, Sugababes and Gabriella Cilmi plus a few legends of rock who included John Mellencamp, Tom Jones and Tony Christie.

Mellencamp honoured for writing prowess

US star John Mellencamp today landed the prestigious title of Classic Songwriter at the 2008 Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka.

The artist formerly known as Johnny Cougar – who celebrates his 57th birthday tomorrow (Tuesday) – is best known for his top 30 hit Jack And Diane and has scored a string of US hits over a 30-year period. They include the huge single Hurts So Good.

Collecting his award, Mellencamp told guests: “I wrote that song 30 years ago that Jack and Diane song and people are still playing it. The whole thing about being a songwriter is to show some humility when you are writing a song you want something that goes into people’s hearts … I’m still hoping to write that song.”

Bat Out Of Hell a 'classic'

Meat Loaf’s Bat Out Of Hell landed the title of Classic Song today at the
2008 Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka.

The huge worldwide hit – written by his early collaborator Jim Steinman – was recognised by Q magazine for its incredible staying power.

Collecting the prize, Loaf exchanged banter with award presenter Al Murray, asking him to repeat a breakneck, off the cuff introduction prior to taking the stage. But after Murray was unable to remember what he had said, Loaf asked: “Could you say something else?”

“I like your hair,” quipped the comic. “I like your hair too, Loaf responded.

Murray shot back: “We’ve got a future you and me.” After Loaf’s failed attempt to sing some Queen songs at Murray’s suggestion, the comic concluded Shall we go to the pub and do that?”

The singer appeared hesitant and not quite at his usual voluble top form as he took to the stage. His publicist said later that the singer was suffering from vertigo and was shaken by an eye injury on the way to the awards event.

Last year the award was won by Stereophonics for their single Local Boy In The Photograph.

Steinman says Bat reflects his philosophy

Bat Out Of Hell‘s writer Jim Steinman said today that the song was “a perfect reflection of my creed”.

The legendary composer – who wrote the song for the album of the same name – said he created the track to be “the ultimate crash song”, “operatic annihilation” and a little piece of "Wagner".

After hearing the track was named Classic Song at today’s Q Awards, he said: “In the interest of being pompous, profound, and pretentious all at the same time, as well as being self-deprecating, even self-lacerating, and brilliant simultaneously, I can truly say that BAT OUT OF HELL is a perfect reflection of my creed: ‘If you don’t go over the top, you’ll never see what’s on the other side”.

“’Bat’ was a complete song after two choruses, at six-plus minutes long. But I thought it was too short - no, incomplete. It needed more! So I toiled away and came up with the final third of the song, starting at: “I can see myself, tearing up the road, FASTER, than any other boy has ever gone……” - and this evolved into the whole CRASH sequence, ending with “the last thing I see is my heart/still beating/still beating/breaking out of my body and flying away ……. Like a BAT OUT OF HELL!”

“Then it was complete. It had been a great driving-racing-speed anthem, plus a suitably obsessive love story, but now it was what I wanted all along: THE ULTIMATE CRASH SONG!! SELF-DESTRUCTION! OPERATIC ANNIHILATION!!!!!!
A LOVE DEATH!!!!! LITTLE RICHARD WAGNER!!!!

“Thus, if I hadn't gone OVER THE TOP, I NEVER WOULD HAVE SEEN WHAT’S ON THE OTHER SIDE. Which I really loved. And which, to this f***ing day, I still love. END OF STORY; AND THANK YOU, Q & MEAT. (That sounds like a distant relative of Spotted Dick: Q & MEAT!)”

Cocteaus an Inspiration

Ethereal indie act Cocteau Twins today landed the Q Inspiration title at the 2008 Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka.

The group – vocalist Elizabeth Fraser, guitarist Robin Guthrie and later Simon Raymonde – pioneered a huge glassy, atmospheric sound layered with often incomprehensible lyrics.

Disbanding in 1997, the band barely dented the charts with releases such as Pearly Dewdrops Drops, Iceblink Luck and Evangeline – but were a huge influence on many who heard them.

The 2007 Q Inspiration winner was Damon Albarn.

Campbell: a 'Q Legend'

Country legend Glen Campbell was today honoured as a Q Legend at the 2008 Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka.

The one-time Beach Boy who created a string of unforgettable songs has recently undergone a Johnny Cash-style reinvention, covering contemporary material by acts such as Green Day.

Campbell is best known for his enduring singles Rhinestone Cowboy and the heart-tugging Wichita Lineman.

The singer said: "Roger miller had the same thing. Roger said he was a legend in his own mind – rather than in his spare time. What can I say except that it’s great to see people with taste. God bless you and keep playing."

The 2007 winner of the Q Legend award was Ian Brown

Viva La Vida is best album

Coldplay’s world-conquering Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends was named Best Album today at the 2008 Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka.

The band’s Brian Eno-produced fourth album sealed their reputation as one of the world’s biggest acts by topping the charts in the UK and US simultaneously this summer.

The award – sponsored by Nixon – was voted for by readers of Q and QtheMusic.com. Last year it went to Amy Winehouse for Back To Black.

Collecting the award, frontman Chris Martin said: “This is fucking awesome, thanks a lot it’s a bit like a wedding speech because everyone here is either friends with us or slagged us off in the Daily Mirror. Our band is a tight unit even though it seems like one man with a balding haircut."

Martin then inadvertantly claimed the band were "the biggest band in the world", before correcting himself. "Well not quite the biggest band in the world," he corrected himself. "U2 are on holiday. Radiohead are on holiday. So we’re kind of substitute teachers. I think this is one of the greatest acceptance speeches of all time.”

Other nominees for the 2008 Best Album title were:

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - Dig!!! Lazarus, Dig!!!

Trip hop pioneers Massive Attack were today honoured with the Q Innovation In Sound title at the 2008 Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka.

Founded in the late 1980s, Massive Attack released their first album Blue Lines – an acknowledged classic in 1991 and have constantly reinvented their sound and approach, working with collaborators such as Shara Nelson, Tricky, Sinead O’Connor and even Madonna along the way.

Collecting the award, Del Naja said: "For a couple of guys that can’t play any instruments and can’t make music, we’ve been innovating for fucking years and getting away with it. Thanks very much.”

Grace Jones named a Q Idol

Hard-hitting diva Grace Jones was named Q Idol today at the 2008 Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka.

The Jamaican-born star – now 60 – was a successful model and turned her theatrical training to movies before finding success in music during the disco era. But it was the series of darker, dubby recordings she made in the early 1980s for which she is most celebrated, including Private Life and Pull Up To The Bumper.

The star – also noted for her striking image – also found notoriety after hitting chat show host Russell Harty during an interview and appearing as a villain in James Bond film A View To A Kill.

Collecting her honour, Jones said: "“I know I haven’t done any music for a long time, and coming through the line of press people were saying 'Grace, you've come back'. Only Lazarus came back. He was dead, I’m not dead. I’ve been on holiday underground!"

“This is a great honour,” the singer added.

Gilmour dedicates his award to late colleague

Guitarist and solo star David Gilmour was honoured with the Outstanding Contribution title at the 2008 Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka – then dedicated it to late Pink Floyd bandmate Rick Wright.

Collecting the award, Gilmour said of Wright – who died last month - “he deserves this just as much as I do”.

And to a standing ovation, Gilmour dedicated a toast to his friend and colleague who played keyboards in Floyd for many years.

Gilmour’s stunning performances have been gracing best-selling recordings for four decades, since joining Floyd in 1968 to fill in for Syd Barrett and taking an ever dominant role in the writing and direction as well as providing the band’s signature guitar sound.

He became leader of the reconstituted band in the 1980s after Roger Waters’ departure, presiding over two more studio albums, as well as releasing a number of solo albums.

Collecting the Outstanding Contribution to Music award – sponsored by Gibson Guitars – Gilmour said: “I’m going to dedicate this to my old friend and colleague Richard Wright who died a couple of weeks ago with whom I’ve worked for 40 odd years.

"There’s all sorts of music I won’t be able to play without him which is a source of great sadness for me," Gilmour said. "One of the last things he wanted to do was play a big outdoor festival such as Glastonbury which we were unable to do.

"Anyway, as I say he deserves this just as much as I do. You could say that he worked in the position of second fiddle to the pushier chaps at the front, but his work was vitally important to our entire career."

The last outstanding contribution award was won by Smokey Robinson in 2006.

Coldplay - 'Best Act In The World'

Coldplay pulled off a double at the 2008 Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka after Best Act In The World Today.

The quartet – who had earlier won best album for Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends – were honoured with the prize, sponsored by Russian Standard Vodka, by readers of Q and Qthemusic.com.

Chris Martin and the band beat acts such as Oasis to the title which was last year won by Arctic Monkeys. They have cemented their position as world-conquering stars with their fourth album which was released in June and topped the charts around the globe.

Frontman Chris Martin went all aquiver as he collected the award from Cerys Matthews.

“About eight years ago we supported Catatonia and you let me hold your cigarette. I thought ‘maybe there is a chance’.”

Unlucky in love Cerys shot back: “There is a chance!”

Martin added: "I don't even think we're the best band in the room, never mind the best in the world."

Other nominees up for the best act in the world today title were:

Oasis

The wit and wisdom of Coldplay .....

Double award winners Coldplay wowed the crowds with some of the best on-stage gags and speeches of the awards:

As drummer Will Champion collected the award for best act in the world, he responded to Adam Ant’s crack that the band had stolen their sartorial ideas from him. “Thanks to Q for inviting Adam Ant and making us all look like f***ing w***ers,” Champion said.

Chris Martin made it clear that he still carried a torch for Cerys Matthews, despite being married to one of the world’s most famous actresses. After collecting the best act title, Martin said: “About eight years ago we supported Catatonia and you let me hold your cigarette. I thought ‘maybe there is a chance’.”
Unlucky in love Cerys shot back: “There is a chance!”

After hearing that David Gilmour and Rick Wright had wanted to play Glastonbury, Martin took a swipe at Noel Gallagher’s Jay-Z dissing comments earlier in the year.
Martin told guest: “Pink Floyd at Glastonbury? I’m not having that.

Chatting to a reporter on the red carpet, Martin joked: "You should never count your chickens before they've been put in a KFC." Asked what the band would be doing next, he said: " Opening a restaurant and a couple of farms."

Q guests head to the pub

Tom Jones is at the bar ordering a brandy and ginger; The Fratellis are stocking up on Champers before standing in the street in a light drizzle. Welcome to the now annual post-awards gathering down the pub.

After the glamour of the red carpet and a top notch dinner, the stars flock to a discreet London boozer to carry on the frivolities. No airs, no graces, it’s a measure of the humility of the stars that so many of them decide to head to the pub with the Q crew after the awards.

Among the other stars to make the pilgrimage following this year’s Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka were Sugababes, Kaiser Chiefs, Massive Attack and Stereophonic Kelly Jones, many of them lining the pavement outside the chosen drinking hole. Cerys Matthews was deep in conversation with Tom Jones; Ricky Wilson was beseeching Kelly Jones: Ricky said: 'Oi Kelly, get us a drink. You've had more hits than us."

Passers-by – and those who had popped in for an after-work drink – were largely unaware of the hitmakers in their midst.

Then, with many of the guests thoroughly lubricated, it was on to the Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes for the aftershow proper.
